What is NAPLAN and How Can Students Prepare?

NAPLAN is something most of us have heard of, but not everyone knows exactly what it is or how it works. NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) is Australia's annual snapshot of how students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 are tracking in reading, writing, and numeracy.

Importantly, it's not about pass or fail. It's about understanding where your child stands and where they can grow. For parents eyeing elite schools or seeking to build a strong academic foundation, NAPLAN offers valuable insights that go beyond a single test score.

What is NAPLAN?

NAPLAN stands for the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy. Introduced in 2008, it's designed to measure whether students are developing the foundational skills they need for future learning and life beyond school. Every student in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 across Australia sits these tests during the same window each March.

The tests are fully online now (except Year 3 writing, which stays paper-based), making them more adaptive to each student's ability level. In 2024, participation rates across Australia ranged from 88.6% to 95.9%, depending on year level.

When is NAPLAN Held?

NAPLAN moved to March in 2023 to give schools faster access to results. The 2026 testing window will run from 11–23 March, with schools scheduling tests within those nine days. Most schools prioritise morning sessions, and students who miss a test day can complete catch-up assessments during the window.

Schools avoid booking camps, excursions, or carnivals during this period, so it's worth keeping these dates clear in your family calendar.

What does NAPLAN Test?

NAPLAN assesses four key domains:

  1. Reading: Your child's ability to comprehend different text types (narratives, persuasive texts, information pieces) and analyse what they read. Tests include multiple-choice and short-answer questions.

  2. Writing: Students get a prompt and 40 minutes to write either a persuasive or narrative piece. Markers look at text structure, vocabulary, ideas, cohesion, paragraphing, sentence structure, punctuation, and spelling.

  3. Language Conventions: Separate tests for spelling, grammar and punctuation. These assess whether students can apply their knowledge correctly in different writing contexts.

  4. Numeracy: Problem-solving across number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics. Questions test whether students can apply maths concepts, not just memorise formulas.

Each test typically contains 30-40 questions, and results are reported on a scale that allows comparison across years. This means a score of 800 in writing represents the same proficiency level whether your child sits the test in 2025 or 2026.

Why NAPLAN Matters for Your Child

NAPLAN isn't just another test. For families focused on academic excellence, it provides:

  • A benchmark for growth: Results show how your child compares to national standards and tracks their progress over time.

  • Early identification of gaps: Teachers use results to spot areas where students might need extra support.

  • Evidence for selective school applications: While NAPLAN results aren't directly used for entry to selective high schools, strong literacy and numeracy skills directly support performance in the Selective High School Placement Test.

  • Foundation skills for senior years: The literacy and numeracy abilities NAPLAN measures are the same skills your child needs for HSC success, university entry, and career opportunities.

Schools can also use results to refine teaching strategies. When data shows students struggling with particular concepts, teachers can adjust their approach school-wide.

How to Prepare for NAPLAN

Here's the truth about NAPLAN preparation: you can't cram for it. The skills tested develop over time through consistent practice and engagement. But there are smart ways to support your child.

Read Widely and Daily

The best preparation for NAPLAN reading is reading itself. Encourage your child to read different text types: novels, newspapers, magazines, and non-fiction. The more they read, the stronger their vocabulary and comprehension become. Younger children benefit enormously from being read to as well – it builds essential skills before they even start school.

Practice Writing Regularly

Set aside 30-40 minutes weekly for your child to plan and write either a persuasive or narrative piece. Give them prompts similar to NAPLAN, such as: "Should students have homework?" or "A day when everything went wrong".

Familiarise with the Test Format

ACARA provides free practice tests on its public demonstration site. Let your child work through a few questions to help the format feel familiar on test day.

Build Numeracy through Real-World Application

Maths becomes meaningful when kids see it in context. Cooking, shopping, measuring for projects, calculating sports statistics – these activities strengthen the problem-solving skills NAPLAN tests.

Focus on Fundamentals

Strong spelling, grammar, and punctuation don't develop overnight. Regular practice matters more than intense pre-test drills. Our 5 study tips for upcoming exams apply beautifully to building these foundational skills.

Building Confidence for Test Day

NAPLAN preparation isn't just academic – it's mental and emotional too. Students who feel confident and calm perform better.

  • Normalise the experience: Talk about NAPLAN as one of many assessments your child will do throughout their education, not as a make-or-break moment.

  • Maintain routines: Leading up to test week, stick to normal bedtimes and healthy meals. Well-rested, well-fed students think more clearly.

  • Encourage a growth mindset: Remind your child that NAPLAN shows where they are right now, not where they'll always be. Skills can improve with practice.

  • Keep perspective: NAPLAN is one data point among many. Your child's classroom work, teacher assessments, and ongoing progress matter just as much for their long-term success.
